How to Load a 35mm Film Camera

Hey there! Matt here from FilterGrade, and today we're diving into a fun and essential topic for all aspiring photographers: how to load a 35mm film camera! Specifically, we’ll be using the Nikon FE2, which is my absolute go-to.

Why Choose the Nikon FE2?

The Nikon FE2 is an incredibly durable camera, making it a fantastic choice for anyone venturing into the world of film photography. To ensure you can maximize your experience, it’s essential to familiarize yourself with your camera before you load the film.

Getting to Know Your Camera

Take a moment to explore all the buttons, levers, and controls available on the exterior. Understanding these features will make your photography journey smoother and more enjoyable.

Loading the Film

  1. Open the Camera Back: Pull up on the rewind knob to open the back of the camera.
  2. Examine the Parts: Once the back is open, take a look at all the parts inside the camera. Familiarizing yourself with these components is crucial.
  3. Grab Your Film: For this tutorial, I’m using a roll of Ilford HP5, one of my favorite black and white films.
  4. Load the Film: Insert the film into the film rewind slot, ensuring the film leader is coming from the bottom and leading towards the film take-up spool.
  5. Pinch for Grip: I like to pinch the film leader strip at the end. This little trick helps the take-up spool grasp onto the film more easily.
  6. Insert and Advance: Insert the end of the film strip into the film take-up spool. Press the shutter release button and then advance your film with the advance lever. This ensures that your film is loaded correctly.
  7. Close the Camera Back: After loading, be sure to close the back of the camera tightly, preventing any light from entering.
  8. You’re Ready to Shoot! With everything in place, you’re all set to capture amazing shots!
